Moosehorn
National Wildlife Refuge
Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge Manager John Magera has announced that the refuge’s 26th Annual Children’s Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, June 15, 2024 at Cobscook Bay State Park’s Headquarters Pond. The State Park is located along U.S. Route 1 adjacent to the Edmunds Division of Moosehorn NWR south of the town of Dennysville. The derby is open to children aged 16 and under. Registration for the event will begin at 9:30 am and the derby will begin at 10:00 am. The event will be held rain or shine and is expected to be wrapped up by 12:00 pm.
The event promises fun for all. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife will be stocking the fishing pond with hundreds of brook trout just before the derby to increase the level of excitement and the kids’ chances of catching fish. Free hotdogs, chips, drinks, and cookies will be provided. Families can take home the fish that their children catch during the derby if they wish. Children can also win prizes such as fishing rods and t-shirts.
Each participant should bring his or her own fishing pole, tackle, and bait if you have them. Extra fishing rods, tackle, and bait will be on hand for those who don’t have their own. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
The derby is a cooperative effort between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Cobscook Bay State Park, the Friends of Moosehorn support group, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, and local businesses and individuals. Moosehorn NWR’s fishing derby is held to increase awareness and enjoyment of our nation’s natural resources. The fishing derby and Headquarters Pond are only open to children 16 and under, but the refuge offers fishing opportunities for anglers of all ages and skill levels on its lakes, ponds, and streams. Fishing is a healthy and wholesome activity that can be enjoyed by everyone. When used and managed carefully, fisheries resources can provide a perpetual source of recreation for current and future generations of Americans.
