Make Someone Smile – Become a Hospice Volunteer

By spending a couple of hours with someone once or twice a week, you can make a big difference in their day. Hospice volunteers are needed in all parts of our county. Right now, especially in Wesley, Alexander, Cooper, Crawford, Charlotte, Baring, Baileyville, Princeton, Grand Lake Steam, Calais, Pembroke, Edmunds, Dennysville, Eastport, Perry Robbinston and all towns in between. Down East Hospice Volunteers is offering a Fall training in Calais this year starting on September 24. See the ad in this issue.

Spend time with someone you already know. Give a few hours to someone you have not met yet. If you are a good listener you can be a great hospice volunteer. Take our training this September and become someone’s companion, give respite to a caregiver, read to someone, help them plan a garden, go through photo albums, write letters, even take someone out for ride. Visit with someone while a care giver attends a grandchild’s basketball game. Or, just be there quietly keeping someone company. Hospice volunteers do not do any nursing care and do not handle any medicines.

Down East Hospice Volunteers has been providing free compassionate volunteer hospice care for Washington County for 43 years. For the first time in 43 years, we had to turn down a family due to the lack of any hospice volunteer remotely close to their community.

Please help us to be able to say ‘Yes’ to every single family who needs our support. You know you have at least two hours a week to spare so please consider taking our training and joining a wonderful team of hospice volunteers. We need both men and women and you will not be asked to take any assignment you are not comfortable with.

The upcoming Fall training is at Calais Community Hospital. We are state licensed and the training is mandatory. If you have further questions, please call our Executive Director, Barbara Barnett at 207-726-5087. To get your application e-mail us at downeasthospice@yahoo.com or call 454-7521 ext. 9126 or download an application from our web site – www.downeasthospicevolunteers.org.
