Arrests Made in Steuben Vehicle Arson Case

 

The Office of the State Fire Marshal has made multiple arrests following an investigation into a motor vehicle fire that occurred on October 13, 2024, on Pinkham Bay Bridge Road in Steuben. The fire, determined to be arson, led to the arrest of 30-year-old Cameron Brown of Steuben shortly after the incident. Brown was charged with arson and theft and transported to the Hancock County Jail. As the investigation continued, Fire Marshal investigators identified additional suspects. On January 8, 2025, 38-year-old William Smeal and 37-year-old Taylor Keene were arrested at their residence in Ellsworth. Keene was identified as the owner of the vehicle involved in the October fire. Both Smeal and Keene were transported to the Hancock County Jail. Smeal and Keene were both charged with Arson (class A), Criminal Conspiracy (class B) and Criminal Attempt (class C insurance deception). The investigation remains ongoing.
