Rotary is working with a non-proft named “Window Dressers” to deliver reusable, affordable, insulating window inserts for people who need an alternative to replacing the windows themselvess. Lupe said to check with you. I’m late asking about this, but it finally occurred to me. We have to get orders in and get them measured by October 7th. Attached is a flier/poster with the salient details.

Here’s how the partnership works. Window Dressers provides administrative support, a web portal, and training for volunteers in local communities on how to measure and construct the inserts. Orders are received online at the WD website.  Then local teams go out and take window measurements, so that we have precision measurements for creating custom inserts for each window. We upload the order, and then Window Dressers cuts the wood, bundles it up, and ships it with the jigs and supplies for each step in the assembly process. The Calais community build will be at St Croix #1 fire house from October 25-31.

The way the inserts are kept affordable is that we ask those who order to come work a four-hour shift for every four windows they order. We also recruit volunteers to work shifts. Even with the low price, some people can’t afford it, and there is assistance available to cover the cost.

The inserts themselves are made of wood strapping frames wrapped with a higher-quality cellophane, so that it creates an insulating heat gap, while letting light in. They’re inserted in the window landing inside the house, and they can be taken out in the spring and reused for several years.
